Palm trees, beautiful beaches, shallow waters, and stunning nature—that’s Koh Phangan. While the island is famous for the monthly Full Moon Party, there’s so much more to it than just that. Over the past few years, more people have moved to Koh Phangan, and with them, local infrastructure has improved.

We’ve been living on the island since 2019. Here are some of my absolute favorite places to explore and things to do in Koh Phangan. Let’s go!

Koh Phangan in a Nutshell

Let’s cover the basics first: What kind of island is Koh Phangan? Here’s what you need to know:

Location: Koh Phangan is situated in the Gulf of Thailand, about 43 miles (70 km) from the mainland and 9 miles (15 km) north of its famous neighbor, Koh Samui. Covering an area of 48 square miles (125 square km), the island is known for its white sandy beaches, the iconic Full Moon Party, and its hills lined with coconut palm trees.

Population: Koh Phangan is home to roughly 13,000 residents, with about 75% being Thai nationals and 25% foreigners. This number surges during the peak tourist seasons, giving the island a very lively atmosphere.

Tourism: Tourism is the backbone of Koh Phangan’s economy. The island’s fame largely stems from the legendary Full Moon Parties, one of the most iconic things to do in Koh Phangan, drawing in between 20,000 to 30,000 visitors each month. In 2019, over 1 million tourists visited, and after COVID, by 2023 and 2024, these numbers appear to have risen even higher.

Economy: More than 80% of Koh Phangan’s revenue comes from tourism. Other significant contributors to the local economy include fishing and agriculture, with coconut farming playing a key role in supporting many local families.

The 30 Best Things to Do in Koh Phangan

1. Explore the Bizarre Bazaar at Seaboard Bungalows

Head to the Bizarre Bazaar at Seaboard Bungalows for an enjoyable Wednesday evening. Kicking off around 5 PM, this vibrant market features arts and crafts from around the world, unique souvenirs, and some food. It’s an ideal spot for a relaxed stroll, complete with two bars serving drinks and light bites like French fries and local favorites.

A different DJ brings the energy each week, playing electronic music until midnight and giving the event a lively, club-like atmosphere. For those who want to keep the night going, there’s an afterparty at a small beach bar at the end of Haad Yao Beach, right where the stairs to Tomorrow X begin—entry is free!

For a great evening, I suggest dining at Coco Loccos and then walking about 100 meters along the beach to the Bizarre Bazaar.

2. Hike to Bottle Beach

Take a beautiful hike through the lush jungle and up the mountains to reach Bottle Beach, one of Koh Phangan’s hidden treasures. Once there, enjoy a swim, grab a drink at the local restaurant, and later take a boat back to Haad Khom Beach (followed by a 10-minute walk back to your starting point). This activity is great for those who enjoy a bit of physical challenge. Make sure to wear proper sports shoes, as flip-flops aren’t suitable for this trail.

3. Hike to Phaeng Waterfall

This scenic hike is one of the refreshing things to do in Koh Phangan, perfect for those looking for an easy adventure. You can park your scooter right at the entrance of the national park office, pay a 100 THB entrance fee per adult, and head up to Phaeng Waterfall (known locally as Nam Tok Phaeng). There are plenty of spots along the way where you can take a refreshing dip, so wearing a swimsuit underneath is a good idea. Keep in mind that water levels change with the seasons, with the most water typically found during the rainy season (October to December) and the high season that follows (until around March).

The Phaeng Waterfall Viewpoint is easy to reach. The hike only takes about 20 minutes.

4. Saturday Walking Street Market

Exploring the Saturday Night Market is one of the most charming things to do in Koh Phangan. Located along the Chinese Walking Street in Thongsala (or Thong Sala), it kicks off around 5 PM. Here, you can wander through the bustling lanes, savor local specialties, and browse the many unique stalls. The market extends all the way to Thongsala Pier.

5. Sunday Night Market in Chaloklum

Similar to the Night Market in Thongsala, Chaloklum hosts its own vibrant market every Sunday. One of the highlights is the live music right by the pier, creating a lively scene where some people dance and others relax on the beach, soaking up the atmosphere. While the market can feel a bit hectic at times, it offers a great experience for those looking to enjoy local food, music, and a laid-back evening by the sea.

6. Sunsets at Zen Beach

The evening gatherings at Zen Beach in Sri Thanu are notorious! Here, everyone meets at sunset for some acro Yoga and to dance into the night to the sound of drums and music jams (every Friday evening, you’ll find a professional drum circle on the beach).

My tip: If you long for fewer people after an evening at Zen Beach, head over to Saladhut at Salad Beach. They have amazing Thai food.

7. Phangan Elephant Sanctuary

Koh Phangan’s first ethical elephant sanctuary, Phangan Elephant Sanctuary, offers an experience focused on the well-being of its elephants. Here, there’s no riding, bathing, or performing—just respectful interactions. Visitors can feed the elephants, walk alongside some of them, and hear their stories of rescue. It’s an ideal spot for those who want to support ethical wildlife practices and connect with these magnificent animals in a natural setting.

8. Snorkeling at Koh Raham

Among the top things to do in Koh Phangan, taking a dip at Koh Raham is a must! This prime snorkeling spot is set at the stunning Koh Raham Restaurant within Haad Son Resort. The staff even feeds the fish while you snorkel, creating an amazing underwater scene filled with fish swarms. Diving masks are available for rent on-site; just bring your own towel.

9. Join a Thai Cooking Class

Whether you’re a cooking enthusiast or just curious, a Thai cooking class can be a memorable experience! Koh Phangan offers several options for cooking classes led by skilled chefs and are perfect for all experience levels. You’ll learn how to prepare traditional Thai cuisine dishes like Pad Thai, Tom Yum Soup, Green Curry, and Mango Sticky Rice, using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Some classes even include a visit to the local markets to handpick the best produce.

The highlight? Enjoying your delicious creations after cooking! Prices for these classes typically range from $10-20 USD per person, with ingredients included.

10. Have Dinner at Bustan

Experience dinner at Bustan, an enchanting Israeli eatery hidden in a lush garden setting in Koh Phangan Madue Wan area. Run by a couple passionate about their craft, the restaurant offers a pescatarian menu featuring fresh, local ingredients and an array of vegetarian and vegan options. Bustan is open only on Fridays and Saturdays, with two fixed seating times each evening. The atmosphere is intimate and laid-back, enhanced by mellow electronic music in the background.

It’s my go-to spot for hosting friends and family—it stands out as the island’s only casual fine dining experience. Be sure to reserve your table as early as possible, especially during the high season when spots can fill up weeks in advance!

11. Catch a Muay Thai Box Fight

For an evening full of energy and excitement, watch a Muay Thai fight at one of the island’s stadiums. This sport is deeply rooted in Thai culture, representing discipline, respect, and tradition. The atmosphere is electric, with the crowd cheering as each fight is introduced and the announcer explains the details of the matches.

Fights generally start at 9 PM, with doors opening at 8 PM. During high season, it’s a good idea to arrive by 8:30 PM to secure good seats. Many stadiums offer VIP seating for about 1,200 THB ($33 USD) per person, giving you an unobstructed view of the ring and a table for drinks, which is around 400 THB ($11 USD) more than standard seats.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even place bets on-site (though winning isn’t guaranteed!). The lively commentary and music can get loud, so consider bringing earplugs if you’re sensitive to noise. There are also local snacks available, like popcorn and Thai pancakes.

Muay Thai is often called the “Art of Eight Limbs” because it uses punches, kicks, elbows, and knee strikes, making it more versatile than traditional boxing or other martial arts.

12. Soak at Navana Onsen

Navana Water Healing Center is Koh Phangan’s first and only onsen spa. The spa features a waterfall infinity pool, a modern sauna, and a spacious onsen bath filled with mineral-rich, warm water at 104°F (40°C). For a refreshing contrast, two cool plunge pools are available after your time in the sauna or onsen. The relaxation area, complete with a bonfire and cozy seating, provides a perfect spot to watch the sunset while sipping complimentary tea or lemon water.

Guests are provided with bathrobes and towels, and lockers ensure valuables are kept safe. The clean, private shower facilities round out the experience.

Navana operates from 4 PM to 10 PM (closed on Mondays and Tuesdays) and charges 600 THB (approximately $16 USD) per person during the low season and 800 THB (about $22 USD) during the high season.

The path leading to the spa has some steep steps, so taking it slow is advised, but the serene experience is well worth it.

13. Try Your Hand at Bow and Arrow Club

Trying out archery at First Bow and Arrow Club is one of the more unique things to do in Koh Phangan. Located just 300 meters before Chaloklum center on the main road, the club is open daily from 9 AM to 6 PM. For 300 Baht (around $8 USD), you can enjoy a 15-minute introductory lesson followed by 30 minutes of shooting, with all equipment included.

The welcoming and knowledgeable owner ensures a comfortable experience for everyone, regardless of skill level.

14. Explore Yoga, Tantra, and Spirituality Classes

Koh Phangan is known for its colorful spiritual and wellness scene, making it an ideal place to explore yoga, tantra, and other spiritual practices. The island is dotted with retreat centers and studios offering everything from traditional Hatha and Vinyasa yoga to more specialized classes in Kundalini and Yin.

For those seeking a deeper connection, tantra workshops and meditation courses provide an opportunity to expand awareness and engage in personal growth.

However, I personally recommend reading plenty of reviews before booking any courses or workshops and only choosing practitioners with a strong reputation. Unfortunately, there are quite a few unqualified providers and self-proclaimed “Gurus” on the island who might leave you with more issues than you started with—when your goal was to heal, not add to your trauma.

15. Visit Madue Wan Temple and Chinese Temple

Visiting Wat Maduea Wan and the Chinese Temple is among the cultural things to do in Koh Phangan.

Wat Maduea Wan, a revered Buddhist temple, sits atop a hill in Baan Madue Wan. This cultural site holds significant respect among locals, with a legend that Buddha’s footprint was left here centuries ago. Visitors can climb a long staircase to reach the ancient temple, marked by an impressive entrance flanked by two large five-headed naga serpents, symbolizing protection and mystical energy.

The Chinese Temple, known as Guan Yin Shrine or the Goddess of Mercy Temple, was built in 1992 and is perched on a hill along the road to Chaloklum. This three-tiered complex honors Guanyin, the Chinese Goddess of Mercy, and provides breathtaking views of the island’s northern coast. Entry is 40 baht, payable at a desk near the parking area, and the temple is open daily from 8 AM to 5 PM.

Make sure to wear clothing that covers your shoulders and knees, as required. Bring essentials like water, a hat, and sturdy shoes for exploring, as it typically takes 2-3 hours to fully appreciate both sites.

16. Unwind at the Sanctuary Resort, Haad Thien

Relax and recharge at the Sanctuary Resort in Haad Thien on the east side of the island. The journey there is part of the adventure—simply catch a boat from Haadrin. Tickets can be purchased from a small stand shaded by a sun umbrella on the beach, near the jet ski area, typically costing around 300 THB per person each way. You can opt for a direct trip to Haad Thien or make a stop at Why Nam Beach, just one bay over. If you choose to stop, a scenic 10-minute walk through the jungle will take you back to Haad Thien.

Once there, enjoy the welcoming atmosphere of The Sanctuary restaurant, known for its delicious food and relaxed vibe.

On our last visit, we had the boat drop us at Why Nam and arranged for pick-up from Haad Thien 1.5 hours later. It was an unforgettable experience!

17. Get a Proper Massage or Spa Treatment

Koh Phangan has an abundance of massage spots, ranging from simple wooden shalas by the beach to traditional, air-conditioned parlors and luxurious spas. Taking advantage of these services is a must when visiting the island! Options include foot massages, traditional Thai massages (with traditional attire), oil massages, and body scrubs. All are typically very affordable and highly satisfying.

For a unique experience, check out Pharao Spa at Summers Resort. The atmosphere feels more like stepping into Egypt than Thailand, with special spa treatments, a whirlpool, and a ‘lay-down shower’ (which might sound unusual, but is definitely worth trying).

My top luxury massage experience has been at the Anantara Hotel in Thong Nai Pan Noi. Their multi-hour treatment packages are exceptional, and the spa itself is one of the most stunning I’ve come across in Thailand!

18. Enjoy a Free Fire Show on the Beach

Thailand is known for its captivating fire shows on the beach, and while Koh Phangan has fewer options, it’s still a must-see if you haven’t experienced one before.

The best spot to catch a fire show on Koh Phangan is Haad Rin Beach after sunset. Fire performers light up the night with their acts in front of the beach bars, creating an unforgettable atmosphere. (Try to avoid visiting during, just before, or immediately after the Full Moon Party, as the beach can be overcrowded and less clean.)

Depending on the performers, the shows can be mesmerizing, with some even incorporating fireworks or setting up platforms in the sea. After each performance, the artists usually walk around to collect donations.

19. Experience the Full Moon Party

Experiencing the Full Moon Party is undoubtedly one of the most famous things to do in Koh Phangan. Held on Haad Rin Beach, this monthly celebration is a night filled with music, neon lights, and dancing under the stars. With DJs playing everything from techno to reggae, each bar contributes to the vibrant and diverse atmosphere. The beach transforms into a full-on festival with glow paint, fire dancers, and bucket drinks.

If you’re planning to attend, make sure to arrive early to grab a good spot and brace yourself for the crowds. Opt for a Songtaew (a local open taxi) to get back to your hotel, and avoid driving if you’ve been drinking. Full Moon Party nights are notorious for filling local hospitals with victims of scooter accidents, so prioritize safety and don’t be one of the mummies the next day!

20. Eden and Bambu Parties

For those seeking an alternative, less commercial, party vibe on Koh Phangan, the Eden and Bambu parties are must-visit experiences. Nestled in the jungle and perched above Haad Yuan, Eden Party offers a unique atmosphere where partygoers dance to deep house and techno music in an intimate setting right on a cliff. The laid-back vibe draws a mix of locals and travelers looking for a more underground scene. Eden Parties usually take place on Saturday nights.

Only a couple of steps away, Bambu Party brings a similar energy, blending electronic beats with an eclectic crowd and breathtaking views of the surrounding bay. These parties usually start on Sundays at noon and end late at night.

21. Explore the Waterfalls of Koh Phangan

Koh Phangan has some great spots for cooling off, and its waterfalls are worth checking out. Phaeng Waterfall is one of the most visited and has multiple tiers to explore. Paradise Waterfall is another option if you prefer a quieter spot with a short hike and a dip. Than Sadet Waterfall, known for its history and peaceful vibe, is also a highlight. These waterfalls are perfect for a break from the beach and to enjoy a bit of jungle adventure.

22. Experience Thong Nai Pan on a Scooter Ride

A scooter ride to Thong Nai Pan is one of the top things to do in Koh Phangan if you’re up for a bit of adventure and stunning views. The journey takes you through winding roads, lush jungle, and hillside viewpoints that offer a glimpse of the island’s natural beauty. The 30 minutes ride itself is part of the experience, with the breeze on your face and the sound of nature around you.

Once you reach Thong Nai Pan, you’re greeted by a laid-back village vibe and beautiful, quieter beaches perfect for unwinding. Just make sure to drive carefully, as some parts of the road can be steep or uneven.

23. Book a Scuba Dive Trip to Sail Rock

A scuba dive trip to Sail Rock is one of the top experiences for divers visiting Koh Phangan (or let’s say it correctly: the ONLY experience for scuba divers in Koh Phangan). Located between Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, this dive site is famous for its impressive underwater landscape and diverse marine life.

The journey out to Sail Rock takes about an hour by boat, but it’s worth it as you descend into clear blue waters surrounded by schools of fish, barracudas, and vibrant coral formations. The highlight for many is the vertical chimney swim-through, adding a touch of thrill to the dive. Whether you’re an experienced diver or just getting started, Sail Rock is a great adventure.

We’ve had good experiences with the crew of Asia Blue.

24. Do some Jet Skiing or Kitesurfing

If you’re looking for a dose of excitement on the water, jet skiing and kitesurfing are two great options on Koh Phangan. For jet skiing, head to popular beaches like Haad Rin or Baan Tai, where you can rent a jet ski and ride the waves with the wind in your hair and the stunning island views around you.

If kitesurfing is more your style, Baan Tai Beach is the go-to spot. The beach’s shallow waters and steady winds make it perfect for both beginners and experienced kiters. Lessons and gear rentals are available at local schools in Thongsala and Baan Tai, so you can get out on the water and ride the breeze in no time.

25. Explore E-Foiling in Koh Phangan

E-foiling is my favorite way to experience the water, and Chaloklum is a great spot on Koh Phangan where you can try it. This unique activity blends surfing with electric propulsion, allowing you to glide smoothly above the waves.

With the help of experienced instructors, beginners can quickly learn the basics, while more advanced riders can refine their skills. The peaceful bay of Chaloklum makes for a perfect setting to master e-foiling. My husband and I were able to “fly” at the end of our first one-hour lesson.

This provider is good, but be sure to ask if the instructor can come by e-foil too. I once had a lesson with the instructor following by boat, and it felt stressful and uncomfortable.

26. Get a Manicure or Pedicure

Treating yourself to a manicure or pedicure in Koh Phangan is a relaxing way to unwind, and it’s not just for women. The island has a variety of nail salons, from budget-friendly local spots to more upscale, spa-like experiences. Whether you’re looking for a basic clean-up, a splash of color, or more intricate nail art, there are plenty of options to suit your style and budget. Just make sure to book an appointment at popular nail salons during high season.

27. Do some Bar Hopping Through Koh Phangan’s Best Spots

Exploring the bar scene in Koh Phangan is a must for those who enjoy a lively night out. The island offers a diverse range of spots, from laid-back beach bars to unique mountain venues. Thongsala and Baan Tai are packed with interesting bars that each bring their own vibe, whether you’re into craft cocktails, local brews, or live music.

For a more adventurous evening, head up to mountain bars like Secret Mountain, where you can sip your drink while taking in panoramic views of the island and the sunset.

Additionally, cannabis is legally sold at many bars and shops across the island. So if you’re into smoking, you should give it a try.

28. Enjoy One of Koh Phangan’s Stunning Viewpoints

Koh Phangan has many breathtaking viewpoints. One of the top spots is the Khao Ra viewpoint, the highest peak on the island at 1,968 feet (600 meters) above sea level. The climb takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, rewarding you with panoramic scenery that’s worth the effort. For an easier and more accessible option, check out the Bottle Beach Viewpoint. You can park your scooter nearby and take a short 15-minute walk to reach the lookout.

There’s also several viewpoints on the hike from Haad Rin to Why Nam Beach on the east coast.

Be sure to bring your drone and plenty of water, wear sturdy shoes, and take your time on steeper paths—the journey is as rewarding as the view itself!

29. Try the Best Vegan Restaurants in Koh Phangan

Koh Phangan is a paradise for vegans, offering a variety of plant-based eateries with delicious and diverse menus. From hearty curries to vibrant smoothie bowls and raw desserts, the island has it all. Some of the best spots include Shalimar for its flavorful, globally-inspired dishes and Karma Kafe, which has a cozy vibe and creative menu. Eat.Co is another favorite known for comforting meals packed with fresh ingredients. Kia Ora, Pure Vegan Heaven, Hexagon, and Foods&Roots round out the list with their innovative takes on vegan cuisine and locally sourced options.

Colorful plate with fresh vegan food
The vegan lunch set at Hexagon is very affordable, costing only 200 THB (approximately $5.50 USD).

30. Go on an ATV Drive in the Jungle of Baan Tai

For an adrenaline-packed adventure, head to Baan Tai for an ATV ride through the lush jungle terrain. The winding trails take you deep into the island’s tropical landscape, with routes that challenge even experienced riders and offer incredible views along the way. You’ll navigate muddy paths, small hills, and dense foliage that make for an exciting and immersive off-road experience. Whether you’re a first-timer or an experienced rider, local guides are available to show you the best trails and ensure safety.

Accommodation in Koh Phangan

After enjoying the many things to do in Koh Phangan, finding the right place to stay can be a bit of a challenge. For shorter stays, hotel sites like Booking.com are your friend. Airbnb can be an option, but prices on the island often run 40-50% higher compared to other places.

If you want to be close to good restaurants and popular spots, look for accommodation on the west side of the island. For a more chill, secluded vibe, Thong Nai Pan is worth checking out—but remember, it’s about 40 minutes away from the west side.

One more tip: The island currently has quite a bit of construction going on. Double-check with your hotel or host about any nearby projects before booking to avoid surprises.

Transportation in Koh Phangan

With so many things to do in Koh Phangan, getting around efficiently is key. But Koh Phangan isn’t the most convenient island when it comes to transportation. Apart from Songtaews (open taxis running daily), there are no public transport or ride-hailing apps like Grab or Uber. So, if you want more freedom and flexibility, renting a car or scooter is your best bet. Not everyone is comfortable driving here, and it’s not just about age—it’s more about confidence and experience. If you’re not up for driving, be prepared for the sometimes slow pace of catching a Songtaew.

Safety Tips for Driving a Scooter in Thailand

  • Always wear a helmet—it’s essential for your safety. I prefer full-face helmets.
  • Drive at slower speeds, especially on steep or uneven roads.
  • Watch out for sand or gravel, as they can make the road slippery.
  • Check that the scooter’s brakes and lights are functioning properly before heading out.
  • Be aware of traffic rules, as they may be different from what you’re used to.
  • Stay alert for sudden moves by other drivers.
  • Avoid driving at night if you’re unfamiliar with the roads.
  • Never ride under the influence of alcohol or substances.
  • Be patient with local traffic and enjoy the ride responsibly.

Final Thoughts on the Best Things to Do in Koh Phangan

As you can see, when it comes to things to do in Koh Phangan, the island offers so much more than just the Full Moon Party. You can immerse yourself in breathtaking nature, dive into Thai culture, and discover and expand your own consciousness.

I hope I could give you some ideas and inspiration. What are your favorite things to do in Koh Phangan? Do you have any questions? Please let me know in the comments!
