Digital Nomad Accommodation: The Nomad’s Guide to Finding Your Next Home Away from Home

Let’s dive into one of the most pivotal aspects of the nomadic lifestyle – finding the perfect place to lay our heads, set up our laptops, and feel a bit of the comfort of “home”, wherever in the world we might be. As Digital Nomads, our homes are ever-changing. One month, it’s a beachside bungalow in Thailand; the next, it’s a bustling city apartment in New York City.

But the question always remains: How do we find these spots that become our temporary havens and home base in a new country? Well, after 5 years on the road (and many lessons learned), I’ve gathered some wisdom and resources I want to share with you.

The Most Popular Digital Nomad Accommodation Platforms

Finding the right Digital Nomad stays is about balancing cost, comfort, convenience, and community. We need places that not only fit our budget but also inspire our work and connect us with like-minded people. Some Digital Nomads seek single rooms in Digital Nomad housing communities, while others need their own space to maintain good mental health, work-life balance and pursue their remote job. So, where do we start? Let’s dive into my personal go-to resources for short-term rentals and long-term leases:

1. Airbnb

AirBnb landing page dektop

Pros:

  • Vast Selection: From private rooms and affordable accommodation to entire homes and luxury apartments, Airbnb offers a wide range of options in nearly every corner of the globe.
  • Personal Touch: Many hosts go the extra mile to make your stay comfortable, offering local tips for grocery stores within walking distance or places where you can dive into local culture.
  • Flexible Options: Whether you need a place for a night, a week, or a month, Airbnb can accommodate you.
  • Discounts for Long-Term Stays: Many hosts offer big discounts if you stay one week or longer. That can quickly sum up!

Cons:

  • Inconsistent Quality: While reviews help, there can still be surprises regarding the quality and accuracy of listings. For me, it’s a big red flag if a listing doesn’t even have a rating yet. Unfortunately, we’ve had bad experiences with a Digital Nomad accommodation that absolutely didn’t look like in the pictures (it didn’t even have windows!). Also having a reliable internet connection in Airbnb’s is not always provided.
  • Service Fees: The added fees can sometimes make stays more expensive than initially anticipated.

2. Booking.com

Booking.com housing platform for travelers
Booking.com is a great option for those seeking hotel rooms and short-term accommodation in different locations

Pros:

  • Diverse Digital Nomad Accommodations: Beyond hotels, Booking.com lists apartments, hostels, and even some unique properties like treehouses and igloos.
  • No-Fuss Cancellation Policies: Many listings offer free cancellation, giving you flexibility in your plans.
  • Reviews: Extensive reviews provide insight into what to really expect for your temporary home.
  • Extra Services: You can also use the app to book discounted tickets for attractions, leisure activities, public transportation, and tours.

Cons:

  • More Impersonal: Lacks the personal interaction with hosts that can be found on platforms like Airbnb.

3. Flatio

Homepage of Flatio, platform to find digital nomad accommodation

Pros:

  • Lease Agreement: Flatio provides a binding rental contract that safeguards both the renter and the property owner, promoting a clear and professional rental process. This contract can also serve as address verification and for visa applications, making it an excellent choice, particularly for Digital Nomads.
  • All-inclusive Bills: Renting through Flatio means you won’t face extra utility charges. The rent covers all expenses, such as power, water, and internet, simplifying budgeting for tenants.
  • No Deposits: Flatio’s listings are mostly free from security deposits, easing the process for renters to secure a desirable place without straining their finances.
  • Viewing Options: Beyond available virtual walkthroughs for certain properties, Flatio enables potential renters to visit most locations in person by coordinating with the property owners, allowing for a thorough evaluation before committing.
  • Flexible Termination: Recognizing that circumstances can shift, Flatio offers adaptable lease termination policies, providing renters with greater leeway.

Cons:

  • Availability Limited to Europe: Flatio‘s operations are primarily concentrated in Europe, which might not cater to individuals looking for accommodations outside of this area.
  • Mainly Whole Properties Available: Most of the properties listed on Flatio are whole apartments and houses for individuals who prefer privacy. If you’re looking for shared workspaces or a more communal environment, this may not be the best option.

4. Facebook Groups, Marketplace, and Local Forums

Pros:

  • Local Insights: Access to local knowledge and off-the-beaten-path finds that you might not discover on larger platforms. I made the best deals so far through Facebook Marketplace in Thailand and Indonesia.
  • Direct Negotiations: The ability to negotiate directly with landlords or roommates can lead to better deals for Digital Nomad rentals.
  • Community Support: Immediate access to a community for advice, socializing, networking and even home exchange opportunities. Sometimes, free stays are offered in exchange for house, pet, or plant sitting.

Cons:

  • Less Security: Fewer safeguards in place compared to established rental platforms.
  • Inconsistent Availability: Listings can be hit or miss, and the best deals go quickly.

5. Coliving.com

Screenshot 2024 02 27 at 16.21.00 1

Pros:

  • Community-Centric: Perfect for Digital Nomads looking to connect with others, offering common spaces and organized events.
  • All-Inclusive: Bills, cleaning, and sometimes even meals are included, making budgeting with a location-independent lifestyle easier.
  • Productive Environment: Many co-living spaces are designed with workspaces to facilitate productivity.

Cons:

  • Limited Privacy: Sharing spaces with others may not be everyone’s cup of tea.
  • Availability: Co-living spaces are not as widespread as traditional Digital Nomad accommodations, so options may be limited depending on your destination.

6. VRBO (Vacation Rentals By Owner)

Housing Platform for Digital Nomad Families

Pros:

  • Wide Selection of Properties: VRBO offers a vast array of vacation homes, ranging from cozy private apartments to luxurious villas, catering to different tastes and budgets. This variety makes it easier for travelers to find the perfect match for their stay.
  • Family-Friendly Options: Many properties on VRBO are designed with families in mind, offering amenities like kitchens, laundry facilities, and multiple bedrooms. This makes it an ideal choice for Digital Nomads traveling with their loved ones.
  • Detailed Property Listings: Each listing on VRBO includes comprehensive details about the property, including photos, amenities, and reviews from past guests. This transparency helps travelers make informed decisions.
  • Secure Payment Platform: VRBO provides a secure platform for transactions, ensuring that your booking process is safe and reliable. This peace of mind is crucial for long-term travelers handling significant payments.

Cons:

  • Service Fees: VRBO charges a service fee for each booking, which can add to the overall cost of your stay. It’s important for budget-conscious travelers to factor this into their planning.
  • Less Flexibility for Short Stays: While great for longer vacations, VRBO might not always be the best option for shorter stays or those seeking more transient Digital Nomad accommodations, as many owners prefer longer rental periods.
  • Variable Cancellation Policies: Cancellation policies on VRBO can vary widely depending on the property owner, which might pose challenges for travelers needing flexibility in their plans.
  • Direct Owner Interaction Required: Booking through VRBO often involves direct communication with the property owner, which can be a pro for some but may be seen as a con for travelers preferring a more hands-off approach.

7. TrustedHousesitters

Screenshot 2024 02 28 at 13.31.01

Pros:

  • Cost-Effective Accommodation: TrustedHousesitters operates on a unique model where travelers provide pet and home care in exchange for a place to stay, eliminating accommodation costs. This can be incredibly beneficial for Digital Nomads looking to save money on long-term travel.
  • Global Opportunities: With listings in over 130 countries, TrustedHousesitters offers a wide range of locations, giving Digital Nomads the flexibility to work from virtually anywhere in the world while experiencing local life.
  • In-Depth Profiles and Reviews: Both house sitters and homeowners have detailed profiles with reviews, which helps in making informed decisions and ensuring reliability and trustworthiness from both parties.
  • Community and Support: TrustedHousesitters has a strong sense of community and offers excellent support, including a 24/7 Vet Advice Line, which can be particularly reassuring for those taking care of pets.
  • Unique Travel Experiences: Being a house sitter allows for a unique and transformative experience, living in local communities and often in places that offer a more personal and homey feel than traditional accommodations.

Cons:

  • Commitment to Responsibilities: The arrangement requires taking on the responsibility of caring for pets and the home, which might not suit everyone, especially those looking for a more leisurely or flexible travel schedule.
  • Membership Fee: To access the listings and apply for sits, both sitters and homeowners need to pay an annual membership fee, which might be a consideration for those unsure about how frequently they’ll use the service.
  • Competition for Popular Locations: Some destinations can be highly competitive, with many sitters applying for the same opportunities, which might make it challenging to secure a sit, especially in sought-after locations or during peak times.
  • Lack of Financial Compensation: Unlike traditional house-sitting jobs, sitters do not receive payment for their services, which might not be ideal for those looking to earn an income while traveling.

8. Agoda

No matter if Latin America or Chiang Mai: Starting with a minimum stay of one night, Agoda offers a suitable type of accommodation for everyone

  • Extensive Accommodation Options: Agoda boasts a vast inventory of Digital Nomad accommodations, including hotels, apartments, vacation homes, and hostels. This diversity ensures that Digital Nomads can find lodging that suits their preferences, whether they’re looking for luxury or budget options.
  • Competitive Pricing: Agoda is known for offering competitive prices, often featuring deals and discounts that can lead to significant savings for long-term travelers looking to manage their budget effectively.
  • AgodaCash Rewards: With the AgodaCash rewards program, users earn points with every booking, which can be redeemed for discounts on future stays. This feature is particularly appealing for Digital Nomads who travel frequently and can accumulate substantial savings over time.
  • 24/7 Customer Support: Agoda provides round-the-clock customer support, offering assistance with bookings, cancellations, and other inquiries, which is invaluable for Digital Nomads navigating accommodations in different time zones.

Cons:

  • Varied Cancellation Policies: Cancellation policies on Agoda can vary widely depending on the property, which may lead to confusion or inconvenience for travelers who require flexibility in their plans.
  • Service Fees: While Agoda offers competitive pricing, service fees are added to bookings, which can sometimes be overlooked by users at first glance. It’s important to consider these fees when budgeting for accommodation.
  • Inconsistent Quality Reviews: The quality and reliability of reviews on Agoda can vary, making it challenging for travelers to gauge the true quality of an accommodation. Digital Nomads may need to cross-reference reviews on other platforms for a more accurate picture.
  • Preference for Short-Term Stays: While Agoda offers a wide range of accommodation options, the platform is primarily geared towards short-term stays, which might limit options for Digital Nomads seeking longer-term arrangements.

9. NomadStays

Platform "Nomad Stays"
NomadStays can help you find the right place if you enjoy socializing and common areas to connect with your new Digital Nomad friends

Pros:

  • Designed for Digital Nomads: NomadStays is specifically tailored to meet the needs of remote workers, offering Digital Nomad accommodations that come equipped with reliable internet, workspaces, and a community of like-minded individuals, which can greatly enhance productivity and networking.
  • Instant Bookings: One of the standout features of NomadStays is the ability to book stays instantly without the need for pre-approvals from hosts. This can save a significant amount of time and hassle, making the process more efficient for Digital Nomads on the move.
  • All-Inclusive Pricing: The platform offers transparent, all-inclusive pricing that covers not just the accommodation but also utilities, internet, and, often, a coworking space. This makes budgeting simpler and more predictable for long-term travelers.

Cons:

  • Limited Geographic Coverage: Currently, NomadStays might not offer as wide a geographic coverage as some of the larger, more established platforms. This could be a limitation for Digital Nomads looking to explore less popular or more remote destinations.
  • Variability in Community Engagement: While one of the perks of NomadStays is the built-in community, the level of engagement and activity can vary greatly from one location to another, potentially affecting the social aspect of the stay.

10. Anyplace

Screenshot 2024 02 28 at 13.56.46 1

Pros:

  • Flexible Lease Terms: Anyplace specializes in flexible leases, allowing Digital Nomads to book accommodations for a month, several months, or longer without the commitment of a traditional lease. This flexibility is crucial for those who prefer not to be tied down to one location.
  • All-Inclusive Pricing: Similar to Flatio, Anyplace offers all-inclusive pricing that covers rent, utilities, and often high-speed internet. This makes financial planning more straightforward and avoids the hassle of setting up utilities in a new place.
  • Wide Range of Accommodations: The platform provides a variety of Digital Nomad accommodation types, including apartments, co-living spaces, and extended-stay hotels, giving Digital Nomads the freedom to choose what best fits their lifestyle and budget.

Cons:

  • Higher Price Point: Due to the convenience and flexibility offered, Anyplace tends to have a higher price point compared to directly leasing an apartment. Digital Nomads on a tighter budget may find it challenging to find affordable options.
  • Limited Availability in Certain Areas: While Anyplace is expanding, there may be limited availability in less popular or more remote destinations, which could be a drawback for Digital Nomads looking to explore off-the-beaten-path locations.

  • All-Inclusive Amenities: Just like Flatio, Behere offers accommodations with all-inclusive amenities. Utilities, high-speed internet, and workspace access are included in the price, making the transition to a new city seamless and hassle-free.

Cons:

  • Limited Destinations: Currently, Behere’s offerings are focused on select cities around the world, which might limit options for those looking to explore less common Digital Nomad hubs or more remote locations.
  • Premium Pricing: Given the curated experiences and focus on safety and community, Behere’s pricing can be on the higher end, which might not fit all budgets, especially for Digital Nomads just starting out or those looking to minimize living expenses.

Screenshot 2024 02 28 at 14.15.40 1

The platform’s straightforward booking process saves time and reduces the hassle often associated with securing temporary housing. A great way to scroll through suitable housing options and finding the right accommodation.

  • Transparent Pricing: Flataway emphasizes transparency in its pricing, with no hidden fees. The prices listed include all utilities, such as electricity, water, and high-speed internet, making it easier for Digital Nomads to manage their budgets effectively.
  • Pay Less: Use the code nomadmum and get 100 EUR off any bundle or subscription plan.

Cons:

  • Focused Market Presence: While expanding, Flataway’s presence is still more concentrated in certain regions, which may limit options for Digital Nomads interested in less common destinations or those seeking a global array of choices. As of July 2024, you won’t find private rentals in Digital Nomad Hotspots like United States, Costa Rica or South Africa.
  • Limited Short-Term Options: Flataway is designed with longer stays in mind, which means it might not be the best fit for Digital Nomads or travelers looking for short-term or flexible accommodations. This could be a drawback for those who prefer to move more frequently.

13. Housing Anywhere

Screenshot 2024 02 28 at 14.22.41 1

  • Secure Booking System: The platform provides a secure booking system that includes payment protection, ensuring that your money is safe until after you’ve moved in. This security feature is particularly reassuring for Digital Nomads who are often booking from abroad.

  • No Hidden Fees: Transparency is key on Housing Anywhere, with no hidden fees or charges. What you see is what you pay, which helps with budgeting and financial planning for long-term stays.

Cons:

  • Focus on Room Rentals: While Housing Anywhere does offer a variety of accommodation types, its primary focus is on room rentals within shared apartments or houses. This might not be ideal for Digital Nomads looking for private accommodations or those desiring more space and privacy.
  • Limited Short-Term Options: The platform is geared more towards medium to long-term rentals, which may not suit Digital Nomads who prefer the flexibility of short-term stays or are constantly on the move.

  • Community Building: Nomadrest places a strong emphasis on community, facilitating connections among Digital Nomads. Through community events and networking opportunities, nomads can meet, collaborate, and share experiences, enriching their travel and work journey.

Cons:

  • Limited Availability: As a niche platform, Nomadrest’s availability might be limited to certain key Digital Nomad destinations. While it offers quality and tailored services, this limitation might pose a challenge for nomads interested in less mainstream or emerging nomad cities.
  • Premium Pricing: Given the specialized nature of its offerings, accommodations on Nomadrest might come at a premium compared to more generic platforms. Digital Nomads on a tight budget may need to weigh the cost against the benefits of the tailored nomadic experience.

  • Flexible Membership Plans: RemoteBase provides flexible membership plans, allowing Digital Nomads to choose between the free newsletter and a premium membership.

Cons:

  • No Guarantee: RemoteBase doesn’t own properties, so it doesn’t have control over them. That means availability can change rapidly.
  • Membership Costs: Access to the RemoteBase newsletter is free. But RemoteBase Premium is a subscription-based email alert service. By setting preferences for budget, location, and size, premium members receive notifications about new listings that meet their criteria.

17. Spotahome

Screenshot 2024 02 28 at 14.44.33

Pros:

  • High-Quality Listings with Virtual Tours: Spotahome stands out by offering in-depth listings that often include high-quality photos, detailed descriptions, floor plans, and even virtual video tours. This allows Digital Nomads to get a comprehensive view of the property before making a decision, reducing the need for in-person viewings and saving time.
  • Long-Term Focus: Unlike many platforms that cater to short-term stays, Spotahome specializes in mid to long-term rentals, making it an excellent choice for Digital Nomads planning to stay in one location for several months or more. This focus aligns well with the needs of nomads looking for stable, longer-term accommodations.
  • Extensive City Coverage in Europe: Spotahome has a strong presence in major European cities, offering a wide range of options for Digital Nomads exploring this region. The platform’s focus on European markets ensures a variety of choices in popular nomad destinations.

Cons:

  • Limited Global Reach: While Spotahome offers extensive options within Europe, its reach outside this continent is more limited. Digital Nomads looking to explore destinations in Asia, Africa, or the Americas might find fewer options on this platform.
  • Service Fee: Spotahome charges a service fee for bookings, which is something to consider when budgeting for accommodation. While this is common among rental platforms, it’s an additional cost that can add up, especially for long-term stays.

18. The Homelike

  • All-Inclusive Pricing: Similar to Flatio, The Homelike includes all utilities in the rental price, covering electricity, water, internet, and sometimes even cleaning services. This all-inclusive approach simplifies budgeting and eliminates the need for multiple bill payments.

Cons:

  • Primarily European Focus: While The Homelike is expanding, its primary focus remains on European destinations. This concentration might limit options for Digital Nomads looking to explore accommodations in other parts of the world.
  • Premium Pricing for Premium Offerings: Given the high-quality, furnished apartments and the all-inclusive nature of the services, the pricing on The Homelike can be on the higher end, which might not fit into every Digital Nomad’s budget, especially those looking for more economical options.

19. Outsite

Cons:

  • Membership Requirement: While the membership model offers benefits, it also means that to access the best rates and perks, one must commit to a membership fee. This might not be ideal for everyone, especially those who prefer pay-as-you-go models or are unsure about their long-term travel plans.
  • Focus on Community Living: Outsite’s emphasis on communal living and coworking spaces might not suit everyone, particularly those who prefer more privacy or solitude in their living and working environments.

What I’ve Learned About Finding a Digital Nomad Accommodation

Over my nomadic years, I’ve had my share of hits and misses in the accommodation lottery. Here are a few pearls of wisdom I’ve picked up along the way:

  • Always Double-Check Wi-Fi Speeds: We’re Digital Nomads, after all. A quick speed test can save you from a world of frustration. It might even be a good idea to have the landlord send you a screenshot of an internet speed test in advance. Better be safe than sorry, because fast Wi-Fi is a must.
  • Embrace Flexibility: Sometimes, the best opportunities and lower rates come from being open to last-minute changes and new locations. For me, this is a hard one. But in some cases, it really pays off to change plans spontaneously. The next great deal might already be waiting for you.
  • Get Personal: Don’t hesitate to reach out to hosts or community members with questions or for advice. Personal connections can lead to good partnerships and strong bonds. Nowadays, I know a lot of house owners and managers in Koh Phangan for example. When searching for new accommodation, these are the first people I get in touch with. I can communicate my personal preferences much better than on any rental sites.
  • Consider Off-Season and Longer Stays: You can often snag better deals for your own stay during off-peak times or by committing to a longer-term stay, such as monthly rentals or a year-long lease. I found that we got the best deals when staying for three months or longer.

Final Thoughts on the Best Accommodation Platforms
