7 Ways to make better Decisions

We face them on a regular basis. Some are easy, some are hard. Some have a big impact on our whole life, while others affect only a tiny part: decisions! Especially in the life of a Digital Nomad Family, it’s often about where we want to travel next, which place we choose to stay, and where the kids go to school. Making better decisions can be a challenging and overwhelming process. However, there are several strategies you can use to make decision-making easier and less stressful. Let’s explore some of the most effective techniques for simplifying decision-making.

7 Ways to Make Better Decisions

Identify your Priorities

The first step is to identify your priorities. What matters most to you? What are your values and goals? By clarifying your priorities, you can eliminate options that don’t align with your values and focus on the choices that matter most to you. You can visualize your goals by making a list or a mind map with post-its on the wall (that’s how we decided to become Digital Nomads back in the day).

The process of identifying priorities serves as a powerful tool to streamline your choices. As a prospective Digital Nomad, there’s a myriad of destinations, work opportunities, and lifestyle options to consider. By understanding what truly matters to you, you can eliminate choices that don’t align with your values and focus on those that resonate with your core principles.

One effective way to visualize your goals and priorities is to create a tangible representation. Whether it’s making a list, creating a vision board, or constructing a mind map with post-it notes on the wall, the act of physically mapping out your thoughts can provide clarity and direction. This tactile approach allows you to visually organize your ideas, making it easier to discern patterns and connections between your priorities.

Interestingly, the decision to become a Digital Nomad often begins with a similar process of visualization and goal-setting. Many nomads, including ourselves, have started their journey by creating vision boards or mind maps to crystallize their aspirations. This visual representation serves as a constant reminder of the why behind the decision, reinforcing the commitment to a lifestyle that aligns with one’s values.

Gather Information

Once you have identified your priorities, you should gather information. This could include researching different options and consulting with experts or trusted people around you. The more information you have, the better equipped you will be to make an informed and better decision. To be even more effective, my husband and I split into work groups and divide research tasks among ourselves. Tools like Notion or Trello can help.

Researching different aspects of the Digital Nomad lifestyle, such as potential destinations, job opportunities, accommodation choices, and legal requirements, allows you to assess the feasibility and desirability of each option. Take advantage of online resources, forums, and communities where experienced nomads share their insights and lessons learned. Engaging with this wealth of knowledge can provide valuable perspectives and help you anticipate challenges and opportunities.

To enhance the efficiency of your research process, consider adopting organizational tools like Notion or Trello. These platforms can assist in structuring and categorizing information, making it easier to track progress and collaborate with others. In fact, dividing research tasks among work groups, as you and your husband have done, is an effective approach. This collaborative effort ensures that each aspect of your nomadic journey is thoroughly examined, fostering a comprehensive understanding of the lifestyle and its implications.

Consider the Pros and Cons

That’s a classic, right? But also one of the most effective ways to make better decisions! Create a list of the pros and cons of each choice, and consider how each option aligns with your priorities. This will help you to evaluate each choice objectively and make a more rational decision.

But be hard on yourself! We tend not to remain objective and give more pros to the preferred side than to the decision we don’t tend to make. At least that’s my personal experience.

Use Visualization Techniques

Visualization techniques can be a powerful tool for many things, especially decision-making. Find a peaceful moment and imagine yourself in each scenario. How do you feel in this situation? What would the potential outcomes of each choice be? How would each decision impact your life? By using visualization techniques, you can gain a deeper understanding of each option.

Begin by mentally placing yourself in the various situations you are considering. How does it feel to wake up in a different city or work from a serene beach? What emotions arise as you navigate the challenges and joys of the nomadic lifestyle? Visualization goes beyond the practical considerations; it taps into the emotional aspect of decision-making.

As you mentally explore each scenario, contemplate the potential outcomes of your choices. How might each decision shape your personal and professional life? What opportunities and challenges are inherent in each path? Visualization allows you to project yourself into the future, providing a nuanced understanding of the potential impacts your choices may have.

Moreover, consider the emotional resonance of each option. How does each scenario align with your values, goals, and priorities? Visualization allows you to tap into your intuition and emotional responses, helping you discern which path resonates more authentically with your inner self.

By utilizing visualization techniques, you gain a deeper understanding of the nuances inherent in each option. This introspective practice provides clarity by bringing to the forefront not only the practical aspects but also the emotional and visceral responses associated with each choice. It’s a holistic approach to decision-making that considers the full spectrum of your experiences and aspirations.

Give Yourself Time

Do you also count yourself among the impatient people who want everything now and immediately? Same here. And that’s one of the biggest mistakes people make – they’re rushing the process. It’s important to give yourself time to reflect and consider your options. Don’t feel pressured to make a decision quickly. Especially if the stakes are high, take all the time you need!

Impatience can lead to hasty decisions that may not align with your true aspirations or priorities. It’s crucial to recognize the value of giving yourself the gift of time—time to reflect, time to consider your options, and time to let your thoughts settle. The decision to become a Digital Nomad is a substantial one, and its ramifications can be far-reaching. Therefore, don’t succumb to external pressures or the allure of immediacy.

Taking the necessary time allows you to delve into the depths of your priorities and goals, ensuring that your decision aligns authentically with your values. Reflecting on the potential outcomes of each choice becomes a more deliberate and thoughtful process when given the space it deserves.

Moreover, when the stakes are high, as they often are when making lifestyle changes, grant yourself the patience to thoroughly assess the situation. The Digital Nomad lifestyle presents numerous opportunities and challenges, and a well-considered decision is more likely to lead to a fulfilling and sustainable experience.

Trust Your Gut

Sometimes, the best decisions are the ones that feel right in your gut. Trust your intuition and listen to your inner voice when seeking better decisions. If something doesn’t feel right, it’s probably because it isn’t. Our bodies have instinctive survival mechanisms that probably ring the alarm when we make the wrong choices. Conversely, if something feels like the right decision, trust that feeling and move forward with confidence.

Our bodies are equipped with instinctive survival mechanisms, finely tuned over millennia of evolution. When faced with choices, your gut feelings can serve as an internal compass, alerting you to potential pitfalls or signaling alignment with your authentic self. If something doesn’t feel right, it’s worth acknowledging that intuitive response. Your body might be recognizing a discrepancy between the decision at hand and your deeper aspirations.

Conversely, if a decision resonates positively in your gut, it’s likely because it aligns with your true desires and goals. That instinctive feeling of rightness can be a powerful indicator that you’re on the path that authentically reflects your values.

In the context of the Digital Nomad lifestyle, where the choices may be diverse and the outcomes transformative, relying on your intuition becomes even more crucial. If a particular destination, work arrangement, or lifestyle choice feels intuitively right, trust that feeling. Move forward with confidence, knowing that your inner compass is guiding you towards an authentic and fulfilling experience.

Make a Plan

Yeah, you made a decision! Congratulations! Now it’s important to create a plan for how you will implement that choice into your life. Identify the steps you need to take and create a timeline for completing each step. You can simplify the process by breaking your decision down into actionable steps. Last but not least: Try to accept that major life changes come with stress and anxiety. It’s easier to accept than to fight these feelings.

Begin by identifying the concrete steps you need to take to implement your decision. Whether it’s researching potential destinations, setting up a remote work arrangement, or handling logistical considerations like visas and accommodation, breaking down your decision into actionable steps can make the process more manageable.

Once you have a list of steps, create a timeline for each one. Establish realistic deadlines to keep yourself on track and ensure steady progress. This structured approach helps you maintain focus and momentum as you navigate the transition into your new lifestyle.

It’s essential to recognize that major life changes, no matter how exciting, often come with a side dish of stress and anxiety. Acknowledge these feelings rather than resisting them. Acceptance can be a powerful tool in coping with the emotional rollercoaster that may accompany transformative decisions. Understand that it’s entirely normal to feel a mix of excitement, uncertainty, and perhaps a bit of apprehension as you embark on this new chapter.

Remember, you’re not alone in experiencing these emotions. Many who have embarked on similar journeys have faced and overcome the stress that accompanies significant life changes. Embrace the process, and be kind to yourself during this period of transition. Seek support from friends, family, or the Digital Nomad community, as sharing your experiences and concerns can provide valuable insights and encouragement.

With these strategies in mind, you can approach decision-making with confidence and clarity, knowing you have the tools you need to make the best choices for your life.
